Bible Verses

“For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.”– Hebrews 12:11

“Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.”- Proverbs 12:1

“But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.” – 1 Corinthians 9:27

“Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” – Ephesians 6:4

“Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered.”- Hebrews 5:8

Christian Bible Lesson Overview

Embracing discipline benefits the leader and the follower.  If a mother or father does not discipline their children, the result affects both the parent and the child.  If the owner of a company, or a manager of a group does not have the courage to enforce discipline, the result is harmful to both the employee and management.

It is important to have the courage and strength to enforce discipline in all situations: family, business, groups/organizations, and friends.  The consequences of not applying discipline over an extended period of time can become devesting.  Not only do the consequences of a lack of discipline become more challenging over time, but in some cases the damage generated can lead to the destruction of work relationships, friendships, and families.

In most cases, applying discipline from the beginning would prevent pain for the person administering the discipline and for the person receiving discipline. Of course, normally many other people are affected by a lack of discipline.

Christian Bible Lesson for Today

Bruce when he was supposed to be working.

Greg is the operations manager for a company that sells office furniture to retail stores in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.  Greg manages a sales team that includes sixteen salespeople assigned to specific territories.  Greg had an opening for the largest territory that included California, Oregon, and Washington.

Greg’s nephew Bruce applied for the job.  Greg was very close to his nephew, so he hired him. Bruce worked hard during the training and started working in his territory within two months.

Greg designed reports and other documentation that was required for the salespeople to complete daily.  The documentation included the calls they completed, the stores they visited, and their actual orders.

After the second week, Bruce only completed the daily documentation a couple of days a week.  Greg mentioned the lack of reports to Bruce, but Bruce continued to only document a few days of his work.  Greg always put his other salespeople on probation after they failed to turn in all the reports for two consecutive weeks.  He asked Bruce about the reports but did not put him on probation.

Bruces’s sales for the territory began to decrease dramatically.  Greg asked Bruce about it, but Bruce always had excuses.  Previously, the territory of California, Oregon, and Washington comprised of twenty percent of the entire company’s sales.  After three months of Greg working the territory, sales dropped 33%.

The Chief Operating Offer of the company had a meeting with Greg.  The result of the meeting was that Greg was put on probation for three months.  If the sales remained below the average for the west coast territory, Greg would be fired.    The CEO decided that Bruce had to be fired immediately.

The sad part of this situation is that if Greg had put his nephew on probation as soon as the sales dropped as he did with other salespeople, Bruce might have worked harder, completed his daily reports, and improved sales.  Because Greg did not embrace discipline with his family member, they both suffered.

Christian Bible Lesson Summary

Not having the discipline or courage to enforce discipline will have a negative effect on everyone connected to the behavior.  It may seem passionate to avoid discipline at the time, but after time passes, the situation often becomes much more stressful.

It is important to exercise the courage to enforce discipline in all situations.  Lack of discipline causes much more challenging situations later.
