“Be ye free from the love of money; content with such things as you have: for himself has said I will in no wise fail thee, nor will I in any wise forsake thee.” Hebrews 13:5
Christian Bible Lesson Overview
When Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, died at the age of 56 he was worth over seven billion dollars. He wrote an essay during his final days. In the essay, he said that you can buy a car for $300,000 or you can buy a car for $30,000 and they both get you to the same place. He gave many other examples of how money did not add significant value to his life. He said his seven billion dollars took most of his life to accumulate, but he never took the time to benefit from it.
There are so many examples of wealthy people who were not happy with their life. They spend all their time working to gain more wealth, instead of developing friendships, helping other people, and being grateful for what they have.
Christian Bible Lesson for Today
I have fond memories of my family during my childhood. My grandmother on my father’s side was the leader of the family. I still remember many times when the entire family would meet at my grandmother’s house to celebrate a holiday, birthday, or some other special day. There would be lots of food, games, and spirited conversation. My best memories were from those special gatherings at my grandparent’s house.
My grandfather worked for the forest service and my grandmother was a maid at a hotel. They never had a lot of money, but always helped family and friends. When any member of the family had a serious challenge, my grandmother would contact everyone in the family and organize a plan to help the member in need. We went to a large Church. Everyone at the Church knew and respected our family. Unfortunately, I did not understand how important our family values were until after my grandparents had died.
Now I spend significant time supporting family and friends. I also spend time helping people in need because it helps me to be closer to someone new. When I think of the things I want to accomplish in life before I die, I want to be like my grandparents, not spending my time increasing the value of my bank account.
Christian Bible Lesson Summary
It is important to work enough to support your life, but as Steve Jobs said, both a $300,000 car and a $30,000 will both get you to the same place. Developing strong friendships and family relationships will give your life value far beyond wealth.
