Bible Verses

“A faithful witness will not lie, but a false witness uttereth lies.”  Proverbs 14:5

Christian Bible Lesson Overview

Of course, it is wrong to lie for the purpose of benefiting oneself.  It is also wrong to lie to benefit one person over another person.  However, what about a lie to protect someone dear to you?  It is that situation that separates the faithful witness from the false witness.  It takes courage to be completely truthful when you know that information will hurt some people.

We must always evaluate ourselves over a period.  Sometimes we initially thought being truthful was hurtful to people we love, but after some time passed, we realized that knowing the truth was better for everyone.

There are times when you should not express anything such as when a legal document prevents you from disclosing specific information.  In that case, you should not express anything rather than express something that is not true.  However, to be a faithful witness, you would communicate that you are not expressing what you know because of the legal requirements.

It is not easy to be a faithful witness, but when you evaluate the results over a long period of time, you will clearly see the benefits of telling the truth.

Christian Bible Lesson for Today

I am part owner of a business that developed and sells business software.  When presenting our business solution to a prospective customer, we begin with a discovery meeting so we can determine if our software will meet the needs of the potential customer.  Over the past ten years, on many occasions, the potential customer has mentioned something about their workflow that would cause extra work, which would increase the overall cost of the solution.  The customer may not have considered all the details regarding their request.

It would be easy to not mention the negative details at the time of the discovery meeting, then close the sale.   Much later when the customer begins using the software and discovers the workflow challenge, our company is faced with explaining why we did not anticipate the complication.  Regardless of what we say at that point, we will either look dishonest or incompetent.

I learned over the years that it is much better to be completely honest with potential customers and avoid closing a sale without investigating all the considerations rather than closing the sale and facing the consequences later.

After analyzing ten years of selling and supporting customers, I am convinced that not only is being completely honest the right approach but over the ten years being honest has improved the overall health of the business.  Our customers are happy with us and refer other customers.

Christian Bible Lesson Summary

Being a faithful witness is often very challenging, but it is not ok to lie to support the greater good.  Over time the benefits of being truthful will make life better for you and all those people interacting with you.
