Then Jesus said to them, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.” – Mark 12:17

Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. – Romans 13:1

Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. – I Peter 2:13-14

Christian Bible Lesson Overview

Although the United States Government was created based on strong Christian beliefs, the freedom to support all citizens regardless of religious beliefs is fundamental within the constitution.  Some of the laws are contrary to the teachings of Jesus.  That was also true during the time Jesus lived when the Romans had laws that were not consistent with Christian teachings.

As Christians, we are to obey the laws of the government unless a specific law causes us to personally disobey a commandment.  If we have the freedom of expression, we have the right to communicate our Christian Message to everyone.  That is the law that is important to us.  If a law is passed that allows an individual to take action that is against Christian teachings, as long as Christians are not required to take that action and have the right to communicate the consequences, we are able to live as Christians.

Christian Bible Lesson for Today

Jim Brandt

I wish to use one United States law that I understand is part of our country’s government, but I personally use my right to convince people to follow Christian Teachings.  That law is the right of a woman to have an abortion.

Recently the right to an abortion was reduced dramatically, but for almost fifty years, a woman had the right in all fifty states to have an abortion within a specified time from conception.  As a Christian, I do not wish for a woman to choose to have an abortion.  However, the law has always given me the right to speak freely.  I have the right to convince people not to pursue abortions.  Being a Christian is a behavior that we choose, not one that the government requires.  If we can choose not to have an abortion, all Christians have the right to live within their beliefs.  It is our objective as Christians to spread the word about righteous living, not to have the government force people to live by our standards.

That is my belief.  I appreciate any comments and other points of view.

Christian Bible Lesson Summary

Regardless of the laws of our government, as long as we have the right to express our Christian Values and are not forced to break Commandants from the Bible, we can continue to witness to other people and spread Christianity.

  1. I agree with your stance against women having abortions. I personally believe that abortion is willingly taking the life of an unborn human being – which the Bible is against. I also agree that we have a right and a responsibility to speak out against this practice (sin). I am also appalled that certain people within the political realm are using words and terms that “soften” the meaning of abortion and make it sound like it’s all about women’s health, and a woman’s right to choose. Women have a right (right or wrong) to choose what to do with their own bodies, but they have no right to take the life of a human being. I also agree that there are certain circumstances that may have caused a pregnancy (rape, incest, etc.), but the majority of instances of pregnancy occurring are due to behaviors that are sinful (against God’s teachings) – my humble opinion. But, I have searched the Planned Parenthood website for information regarding abortion that, again in my opinion, should make us weep.

    1. John, thank you for your comment. I agree about the politicians softening the effect of abortion. I feel that all Christians should witness to everyone how wrong abortion is. My point is that regardless of the law, as long as we have the right to express our outrage, we can act as Christians and do our best to influence others.
