Bible Verses

“Whoever will not receive you or listen to your words—go outside that house or town and shake the dust from your feet.” — Matthew 10:14

Christian Bible Lesson Overview

Regardless of how much you try, or hard you work, some people will not listen to you.  It is essential always to make a substantial effort, but sometimes it will be apparent that an additional effort on your part will not convince the other person to consider your thoughts.  When you find yourself in this situation, it is best always to be polite but focus your attention elsewhere.

It is essential to use your time wisely.  You will reach many more people if you manage your effort and communicate with those open to considering behavior that helps other people.  Do not be discouraged when some people will not share your values.  Shake the dust from your feet and continue to grow and share your values with other people.

Christian Bible Lesson for Today

I have been active in politics since graduating from college.  I supported candidates, gave speeches for candidates, and I was the nominee for congress twice.    Participating in politics includes presenting ideas to many groups of people, and sometimes those groups are not open to considering the views of other people.  There were times that no matter how hard I tried to communicate with someone, they would not listen to new ideas.

After campaigning for a few months, I realized that my efforts were better utilized when I talked with people who were open to new ideas.  Not only was my campaign more efficient, I felt less stress and was encouraged to meet more people.  Managing my time does not mean giving up on people after initial conversations, and it means when I realize that people are not open to change, to move on to other people.

My experiences in politics were the most dramatic examples of this concept. Still, I found the advice of understanding when someone was not open to changing their mind about a subject and focusing on other people valuable in many parts of my life.  I talk with customers regularly in my work, and I learned how to understand if a customer was open to discussing a situation or if their mind was closed.  I was so much more effective working with those customers who were open to listening to me.  I did not spend a lot of time with customers who would not change their minds regardless of anything I said.

Christian Bible Lesson Summary

It is good to be open and supportive of other people.  Always be supportive and honest.  However, there is a point when you perceive that the other person will not consider your views, and in that case, you need to communicate with other people.  Unfortunately,  sometimes the person who is not open to your ideas is a family member or close friend.  It is still important not to spend time convincing them of concepts they will never support.

  1. Great thought – we like to think we are always right. It reminds me of “The Fonz” from Happy Days. He couldn’t bring himself to say “I’m wrong”. It does good to “shake the dust off our feet” so we don’t track all our dirt around.🤣
