“A righteous man knows the rights of the poor; a wicked man does not understand such knowledge.” — Proverbs 29:7
Christian Lesson Overview
A person who understands how he affects the world and how the world affects him knows he benefits when he helps people in need. By helping the neighborhood, the country, the world; a person improves their own life. It is important to note that many benefits are not financial in nature. Helping to develop a community that is safe and where people trust each other leads to benefits beyond wealth.
Living with people who are not frightened of hunger has much more value than generating more wealth than you will need. Reaching others with generosity and care will help to create a community that will improve everyone’s life.
Christian Lesson for Today
A man named Edward worked hard to elevate his life to a level where he was respected by his peers at his company. Edward worked his way through college and a graduate program. He focused almost all of his time on his work in an effort to move up the ladder of success. He did marry and had children, but he worked most of the time and had his wife take care of the children. He purchased a nice home and took his family on special vacations every year. He was never satisfied that he achieved enough from his work. He continued to work long hours and focus on closing the next opportunity.
When his children were almost through high school he realized that he had not spent quality time with them. He was not even sure how to get closer to his children and other family members or friends.
He received an invitation from his brother, Bill, to celebrate Bill’s son for graduating high school. Edward had a strong feeling to go to the celebration. His brother was happy when he accepted the invitation.
He never respected his brother. His brother did go to college but did not focus on work. Bill spent a lot of time with his children and worked with the community to help improve the town and support those people who have challenges with living. Edward always knew his brother would not achieve very much in business.
When Edward went to the celebration at his brother’s house, he was amazed. He had no idea how many close friends Bill had. Bill seemed so happy spending time with all levels of friends. It was clear that all the friends loved and respected Bill. This event gave Edward a new view of life. Edward could feel how many of the people felt close to his brother. Bill did not grow to a major financial level, but he had the friendship and respect of so many people. He saw that there is much more value to earning than wealth. Quality of life is measured by overall comfort, security, and trust.
Christian Lesson Summary
Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, summarized the message from this blog article. During Steve Jobs, worth over $7 Billion said the following on his death bed: “”I reached the pinnacle of success in the business world. In others’ eyes my life is an epitome of success.
However, aside from work, I have little joy. In the end, wealth is only a fact of life that I am accustomed to.
At this moment, lying on the sick bed and recalling my whole life, I realize that all the recognition and
wealth that I took so much pride in, have paled and become meaningless in the face of impending death.
